Which domicile state actually fits how you live?

South Dakota, Florida, Texas, and Nevada all charge $0 state income tax. The real differences are in the physical-presence bar, the documentation, the deadlines, and what a former state can and cannot use against you. Answer 7 questions to get a ranked, cited recommendation.

General information, not tax or legal advice. Every claim below traces to a state dossier field or a cited source in the methodology section.

Four states, one real question

Every one of these states markets itself as the easiest place to become a resident. They are not identical. South Dakota asks the least of your physical presence. Florida and Nevada give you a sworn declaration to hand a former state's auditor. Texas rewards people who actually buy property. The quiz scores your answers against those real differences, not marketing copy.

Frequently asked questions

Which state is best for full-time RV domicile: South Dakota, Texas, Florida, or Nevada?+

It depends on what you weigh most. South Dakota has the lowest physical-presence bar (a driver's license after one overnight stay). Florida has the only formal, notarized Declaration of Domicile and the fastest vehicle registration deadline. Texas has the largest homestead exemption for owned property. Nevada has the strongest creditor-protected homestead and a court-filed Declaration of Domicile. The quiz above weighs these against your own situation.

Do South Dakota, Florida, Texas, and Nevada have a state income tax?+

No. All four impose no personal income tax on wages, retirement income, or capital gains. That is the baseline reason they are compared against each other in the first place; the real differences are in how each state defines and documents residency.

How fast do I need to register my vehicle in each state?+

Florida requires vehicle registration within 10 days of establishing residency, the tightest of the four. Texas allows 30 days. South Dakota and Nevada both allow 45 days, the most runway of the four.

Which of the four states has a formal declaration of domicile I can file?+

Florida (Fla. Stat. §222.17, recorded with the county clerk) and Nevada (NRS 41.191, filed with the district court clerk) both offer a sworn declaration. South Dakota and Texas have no equivalent filing; domicile there is built from the combination of a driver's license, vehicle registration, and (in Texas) the homestead exemption.

Will my old high-tax state still audit me if I claim one of these four as my new domicile?+

Yes. None of the four runs an aggressive exit or entry audit process of its own; the audit risk sits entirely with the state you are leaving. A former high-tax state tests whether you genuinely left, using its own day-count and evidence rules, regardless of which of these four states you chose.

Which state is easiest for someone with no fixed address, like a full-time RVer?+

South Dakota. Its driver's license rule lets you establish residency with as little as one overnight stay (documented by a campground, RV park, or hotel receipt, or a signed affidavit) plus a South Dakota mailing address, the mechanic that made it one of the three dominant RV domicile choices alongside Texas and Florida.

Does jury duty differ significantly between these four states?+

No state exempts a resident from jury duty simply for being mobile. Community reporting from full-time RVers suggests call frequency tracks a county's population and caseload more than the state itself; a low-population domicile county tends to see fewer summonses regardless of which of the four states it is in.

Which state has the strongest estate or trust planning advantages?+

None of the four has a state estate or inheritance tax. Beyond that baseline, South Dakota is nationally recognized for favorable trust law (no rule against perpetuities, strong asset-protection statutes), and Nevada's homestead exemption shields up to $605,000 of home equity from most creditors, the highest figure of the four.

Methodology and sources

Each answer awards points to South Dakota, Florida, Texas, and Nevada based on that state's actual establishment rules: declaration-of-domicile availability, vehicle registration deadlines, homestead and trust-law differences, and documented snowbird, RVer, and retiree patterns. Every question cites the specific dossier field or source it is scored from; see each question's citation in the quiz above.

Facts on Florida, Texas, Nevada, and South Dakota residency requirements come from data/residency dossiers built from each state's revenue agency, DMV, and Secretary of State sites. Jury duty call frequency and RV-community vehicle cost patterns are not published by any state government; those two factors are sourced from community and practitioner reporting (Escapees RV Club, RV owner forums, RV LIFE, Roamly) and weighted lightly for that reason.

This tool provides general information, not tax or legal advice. Every move should be confirmed with the destination state's current rules and, for anyone with real audit exposure, a CPA or residency attorney.
